Interview With Greg England

I'm excited to tell you I'm starting a new feature today here at Finding Direction.  I'm presenting a series of interviews with some of you, my fellow bloggers, to be posted on a regular basis for a while so that we can all get to know each other better.  I've sent out just a few "invitations" for interviews so far and response has been good.  If I haven't invited you to interview yet and you'd like to, please email me and I'll send the questions to you.

Our first interviewee is Greg England of The Rev's Ramblings. He speaks for himself below, so read on and let Greg know in comment what you think and what you may have in common!   Also check out his blog because it's a great one to read every day!

 Part I.  Basic Interview Questions

 1.  What's your favorite scripture?

Actually my favorite, or better, most transformational, Scripture would be Heb.4:1-11. Many years ago I heard a British scholar teach on this passage, explaining the rest or sabbath of God ... that we can stop trying to be good enough and rest in what God has done on our behalf. That concept completely transformed my walk with God.

I also love Rom.5:6-11. Over the past 30 years of preaching full time, preaching through Colossians was a great journey, that Jesus is sufficient for everything and the "Christ in me" theme. That went hand in hand with the "sabbath" principle of Heb.4.

Preaching for 2-1/2 years through Luke was transformational for our church. It's just difficult to limit this answer to any one passage.

2.  Vital Statistics:  Month, Day, (Year Optional) & Place you were born

March 19, 1953 (on my  favorite uncle's 15th birthday ... he became my best friend). Sheffield, Alabama. Colbert County Hospital.

3. Names and birthdays of spouse & children

Wife of 32 years, Janice, May 18
Josh, Sept. 6
Jessica, Jan. 30
Chipper (our dog), some time in May, 2004

4.  What brought you to Long Beach, California?

Fate? I had been in a  horrible ministry situation in Florida for the previous 7 years. The last place I wanted to raise my children was Los Angeles County, California. I talked with one of the elders here on the night Bill Clinton was first elected (a bleak night in my life on many levels) and told him I'd heard the Long Beach church was looking for a preacher.

He told me they had already narrowed the search down from about 35 candidates to two men, but send him my resume overnight delivery. Through a process of prayer and much apprehension (on my part), we were asked to come to Long Beach in April of 1993. It's been an incredible blessing!

5.  Where all have you lived in your life (and when):

Sheffield, AL as a babe. Moved to Meridian, MS for a couple of years, then to central Florida (Maitland and then Orlando) from about the age of 5 until sixth grade. Montgomery, AL from 7th through 9th grade. Tenth grade through marrying Janice in 1975, I lived in Sheffield, AL.

After we married, we lived in Florence, AL (just across the Tennessee River from Sheffield) until moving to Rockledge, Florida in 1885. In 1993, we moved to Long Beach, CA and have been here since. Looks as if we may live out our lives here in Southern California.

6.  What other kinds of work have you done (and why):

I've worked construction as a "gopher" and as a carpenter. Taught psychology courses for Alabama Christian College for two years. Counseling and hypnotherapy for six years while preaching part time for a small church in rural Lauderdale County, Alabama. Full time preaching since 1985.

Eight years in Rockledge, FL and the past 13 years in Long Beach. I was a high school basketball official for 18 years in Alabama and Florida. For six years, I served the Rockledge Police as departmental chaplain, named officer of the quarter twice for my work with detectives in homicide. Wrote SOP (standard operating procedure) for death notifications from the department and co-wrote SOP for post-traumatic event debriefing for all officers. Most recently,

I passed my state licensing exam to be a funeral director in California, which I've done part-time for the past three years. Became licensed in May of 2006.

7.  Who has been the most influential person in your life & briefly why:

My wife. We dated four years and then were engaged another three years before we married. Her consistent faith in God and her unwavering positive outlook on life have had a huge impact on my life. Her unconditional love never ceases to amaze me.

8.  Any hidden talents:

If I revealed that, they would no longer be hidden, now would they? I play guitar, banjo, percussion, and keyboards. Sing vocals in our church praise band and on our praise and worship team (as a sub).

For many years, I was professionally certified as a hypno-therapist. A few years ago I went through Pepperdine University School of Law's conflict resolution / mediation training.

9.  Little known fact about me:

Can't think of a one.

Part II - Favorite Things

1.   Favorite Book (other than the Bible):

Phillip Yancey, "What's So Amazing About Grace?"

2.  Favorite Movie:

Robin Hood: Men in Tights. (Mel Brooks comedy)

3.  Favorite Food:

Steak

4.  Favorite Kind of Music:

Can't give a favorite. I love so many types of music. Rock. Blues. Contemporary Jazz. Country. Bluegrass. Contemporary Christian.

5.  Favorite musical group or performer:

Can't give just one: Eagles. Chicago. Chris Tomlin. Stevie Ray Vaughn. Twila Paris.

6.  Favorite Song:

Too many to mention.

7.  Favorite junk food:

Anything sweet and containing coconut.

8.  Favorite childhood memory:

Going into the woods with my grandfather. He would cut a piece of wood from a hickory tree and make me a flute. Just about anything with my grandfather or grandmother on my mother's side.

Part III - Thought Questions

1.  What is the best meal you have ever eaten?

Steaks at my friend, Tom's, house. He can grill a steak that is just short of a worship experience!

2.  Where would you most like to visit that you have never been before?

Holy land and Greece.

3.  What is your proudest moment?

Becoming a father to Josh and Jessica.

4.  What do you most regret?

At one time, it would be not completing my doctoral degree. These days it is not taking seriously piano lessons when I was much younger.

5.  If money, health, etc, were no concern, what would you do with your time?

Probably exactly what I'm now doing. I absolutely love what I do.

6.  What is your favorite book in the Bible and why?

Luke. When I was a senior in college, my walk with the Lord was very weak at best. My fiancee was very strong in her faith and we were planning to be married shortly after I graduated. I knew I needed to get serious  in my walk with the Lord or walk away from it altogether.

I went and talked with Dr. Batsel Barrett Baxter about my conflict and after about an hour in his office, he told me to read Luke as if I'd never read it before and allow Jesus to become real to me. I didn't take his advice for several months, but when I finally did, it was a transformational moment in my life.

A couple of decades later, when I preached through Luke at Long Beach, I saw the spirits of people change almost before my eyes ... including my own spirit.

Greg, I learned a FEW things I didn’t already know.

I’m so glad to know you like coconut. It’s one of my favorites. It was my dad’s, as well. He would bring home a whole coconut, chop it open, and drink the milk inside.

Interesting to know Batsell Barrett Baxter was important in your life. I know others who point to him as a great influence.

Also interesting about the book of Luke. After John Roberts started his sermon series on this book, I’ve read through it once already, and am now going through it again. I’ve seen so much through John’s eyes that I never saw before. Now if I could just get it to hit me between the eyes like it has him and you!

Enjoyed reading about my #1 West Coast Bro. However, I don’t believe Greg was completely honest about his favorite Bible Verse. No pressure here though.

  3. on 09 Jan 2007 at 12:18 pm Greg England

Cec: I actually did share the verse with Dee, but told her to use her journalistic integrity and NOT print that. I have somewhat of a reputation to protect! Anway, that verse belongs to you-know-who out here who is one of our shepherds.

Judy: I, too, have feasted on John’s articles from his preaching through Luke. Were I to ever preach that series again, I would “steal” a lot of his thoughts … but in the sense that the best form of flattery is imitation, or however that saying goes.

Now the world knows some of why I think Greg is such a great guy! I met him in blogland; and, recently enjoyed a steak dinner with his sweet wife and him while I was attending a conference in California.

Thanks, Dee, for providing this excellent way for all of us to get better aquainted!

    Blessings,

Greg a steak lover. I knew your southern roots had cemented you in…

But Robin Hood- men in Tights? That must be the California influence (OK I like it too, but favorite?)

The hypno therapist thing is cool…you should blog about that sometime.

I have never seen men in Tights,

  9. on 10 Jan 2007 at 5:27 pm Greg England

Janice: You really don’t want to see men in tights, but you might want to rent the MOVIE! :)

  10. on 10 Jan 2007 at 6:08 pm janice

Greg, I ment the movie, I have seen the NutCracker and them men were in tights ;)

  11. on 11 Jan 2007 at 10:53 am Patrick Mead

Never say “Nutcracker” and “men in tights” in the same sentence. The picture that conjures up is just… wrong….

  12. on 11 Jan 2007 at 1:07 pm janice
