I know exactly what you mean. We have way too much stuff. When we moved back to TX from VA (almost 7 years ago) we had 3 days to find a house. There were things we had to have in that house, a fenced, sodded backyard for the dog was a biggie! We ended up with a much larger house than we ever planned to have, in fact we have a 3021 sq ft house. I often tell people that there are three of us in this house and my daughter has 3000 sq. ft and me and my husband share the other 21! I know that we could easily get rid of 1/2 of the stuff we own and never miss it. I recently got rid of my 9 yr old’s baby clothes (because I am pretty sure the next baby in this house will be a grandbaby and not for many many more years.) I think that I will make it a goal for us this year to simplify our lives and get rid of some stuff. Am looking forward to reading your post tomorrow and seeing what kind of trouble you stir up! Blessings!

If ugly is cheaper, then I’m worth practically nothing!

Stuff. The scourge of our culture. We have a garage we can’t park a car in because of stuff … mostly exercise stuff that’s covered with other stuff … and a storage room that’s half filled w/ either Christmas decorations, seasonal clothing, or the kid’s stuff. But if I ever move from here . . . . .

Yeah, right, Greg – that’s what you “STUFF” collectors always say! As for me and Tom, we’ve always kept our garage totally cleaned out with both vehicles in it, unlike any of our neighbors!

The same was true in the house. In fact, after my last cleaning spree about three years ago, about half of our closets were empty! Imagine that!

What’s so sad is that we STILL have way too much STUFF!! We realized that when we got ready to move up here to Picayune and wished, once again, that we had less.

Coincidentally, we’ve already decided that when we move in our house we are going to fix it up and set furniture out where it fits and decorate with some of our many prints and paintings and pictures and put memorabilia away, including lots of family pictures from over the years that are all organized, and then are going to have a huge garage sale and get rid of a lot more stuff.

It’s amazing how relieving it is to do so. Amazing. It’s just a huge relief not to be dependent on so many material things.

Try it – it’s good for you.

All one has to do is move across country to know how much stuff they really have. All of us have too much.
Thank you for taking us along on the housebuilding journey.

Still praying all was well at the MD.

Dee, I agree with you. Most people could live in WAY smaller homes too. They are actually more comfortable.

As for ugly and cheap…I don’t remember when it was but the quote is: “Ugly is always cheaper, whether (fill in the blank with whatever material is being considered) or prositutes…ugly is always cheaper.”

It seems church clients get the biggest laugh out of that one. Go figure.

I was still thinking about your post and I thought of one time that ugly was not cheaper. Romans 5:8
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
While we were at our most obnoxious, most awkward, absolute ugliest, God paid the very best heaven had to offer.
    How cool is that?

Just thought I’d add that little twist.
    Love
    Neva

richard foster’s book on the disciplines has a great chapter on simplicity

I bought his book, “the freedom of simplicity” but have only read a chapter or two

    good stuff

it is shocking how little we really need in this life

Ugly … I guess that is why I was free, :-)

I need to touch base, Dee, because between Milwaukee and Tucson I have forgotten my Grace Notes password.

    Shalom,
