The Test of Authentic Religion

Authentic religion is not a theology test.  It's a love test.

Oliver Thomas

Here's yet another good quote I got the other morning in my daily devotional email I get from "This Day's Thought."   I really like this one a lot and agree with it wholeheartedly.  Don't you?  Or do you?

If you don't, go back and read Scripture a bunch more and challenge this.  Read the gospels and Paul's letters to new Christians and I John.  Dwell on I Corinthians 13 for a while and ponder it's facets and characteristics in your heart.  Fall in love!

When Tom and I were married we printed up sheets on vellum like paper with I Corinthians 13 typed up as a poem to hand out to our 35 guests.  We started with I Corinthians 14:1 which says, "Follow the way of love."

I think I want to think about these things today.  About love being authentic religion.  And try to put that into practice in all I do today, how about you?  I don't know about you, but I want to pass the test!

Let me leave you with this today to think about.  Here's what we had on the handout sheet at our wedding when we married on my birthday 16 years ago:

                         THE WAY OF LOVE
I Corinthians
14:1          Follow the way of love
        13:8          For love never fails--

        13:4          Be patient and kind,
                         Envy not,
                         And do not boast.
        13:5          Never be proud,
                         or rude,
                        And seek not your own.

                         Do not easily be angered
And keep no record of wrongs
13:6          For love does not delight
                         in evil
                         But rejoices in the truth.

           13:7       Always protect,
                         Always trust,
                         Always hope,
                         And always persevere.

       13:13         Faith will become sight,
                         Hope will become promise,
                         There remains only love.

Sixteen years later, you still have that perspective! Just don’t let the builders of your house take it away from you.

Thanks for sharing these thoughts, Dee. When I read the title it made me think of James’ summary of religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless. Thanks for the encouragement. Cheers right back at you! -bill
