We’ve Got Kitchen Counter Tops! . . . Except One?!?

July 25th, 2007 · 11 Comments · Uncategorized

Well, there’s good news and bad news today and the worst of the bad news is not that one small counter top has not arrived as of yet.  I mean, that’s bad enough, but the really bad news is that we are having plumbing problems again here in this brand new house.  Depressing, to say the least, although it could be worse.

I suppose the worst part of it is that I can’t do laundry and I’m trying my best to get ready to go to Abilene tomorrow to see my mom.  The roto-rooter man is supposed to be out later this morning, but I don’t know if he can get the back line in the master bathroom cleaned out sufficiently or not.  So far the other plumber has had no luck except on a purely temporary basis.

If worse comes to worst, I can always just pack up some of my dirty clothes and go home to Mom’s.  She has a washer and dryer and is a full service mother!  ha!  (Just kidding Mom.)

Oh yeah . . . would you like to see the long awaited counter tops?  They are Formica, but look like poured concrete and/or stone and match the floor tile and the carpet color and walls very well.  We love them and they look great.  And it is so nice to finally have something besides that porous plywood/particle board that was the previous counter top.

Here goes.  Three pictures to add to the collection of a couple of days ago:

I’ll next post from Abilene.  It will most likely be tomorrow night or Friday morning as I do not arrive in Abilene tomorrow until about 6:30 p.m.  Mississippi and west Texas are both in Central Daylight Savings time zone, but where we live is about 750 miles east of Abilene, so the sun goes down in the evening about an hour later out there than it does here.  It also comes up in the morning about an hour later, too, of course, which is fine with me since I am no longer an early morning person.

See you from Texas!  Wish us luck with our plumbing problems and pray for me that I have a safe journey tomorrow.  I leave New Orleans about noon.  Dee

Oh Dee…. more plumbing problems?? Is any of this related to the septic system? I am kinda nervous of buying land in the areas my husband is looking at because they all involve having to have a septic system as opposed to a public sewer system. I know today’s septic tanks “aren’t your grandmother’s”, but it still makes me nervous. I sure hope yours get resolved soon.

    Enjoy your time in Abilene!

I don’t know, Dee … that plywood sort of grew on me. Are you sure you want to stay w/ the new stuff? As for the plumbing, I told you in an earlier blog you can expect this in Mississippi … they are just now learning all about this new indoor style of crapper. My guess is you’re not having any problems with the water pump outside … or the deep well?

The counters and the kitchen are beautiful. I hope the plumber can fix the problem, I know that is frustrating for you. Enjoy your time with your Mom and say a little prayer for my family that we will continue to keep our head above water as SA continues to get closer to sea level! Blessings!

    Karen -

You asked about the septic tank system before and I forgot to answer you, so let me do that now.

No, our plumbing problems are not connected to the septic system at all. The problem is with some kind of obstruction in the line from the master bath to the main line, all running under the slab.

We get our water from a co-operative water association and so have a water meter at the house. Then we have a septic tank that all of the sewage flows into on the lower left side of the house. But the problem lies within the line under the slab itself, so it wouldn’t make any difference whether we were on a city water system or not.

This is the second house I’ve lived in over the years that had septic systems and ours before did fine. You just have to have it cleaned out every once in a while.

I also know a good many people who’ve had septic systems who never had any trouble with them either, other than having to have them pumped out as sewage filled them up.

The house I grew up in on the farm had a septic tank and we got water from a well and it was all fine. Just normal maintenance type problems. It IS a consideration, though, if you like city services and can get good ones. Wells cost money and septic systems do, too, that are bigger chunks at a time than paying a city water bill monthly.

Nice kitchen pics. We’re in the process of remodeling ours. I saw on Big White Hat that you’re from Abernathy. I grew up in Olton. Small world!

    Dee,
    Everything looks so beautiful.
I bet you can’t wait until you get everything done.
I will be praying for you as you get settled in, because I know how stressful it can be.

Dee – I’m back from Atlanta but you’re leaving for Texas. Give Mom a “blog shout-out” for us from West Cocoa.

Good to see the countertops in but the plumbing problems – oy vey! I have to clean the filter on my septic tank (no comments from Greg please) about once a year. Great fun. Makes me feel like “Cousin Eddie” from “Christmas Vacation.”

We’ll pray for a safe trip for you to Texas. At least you don’t have to ride the MARTA there.

It’s always odd for my parents when they come to visit, too. My mom always comments on how light it is a at 6:00 or 8:00…

Call me and we can have coffee (or tea?) under Jim Waldrop
