Thunderstorm Porch Sittin’
August 28th, 2007 at 2:07 pm by Dee O'Neil Andrews
Tom says that when storms move from east to west, against the flow in the U. S., which is normally west to east, at least generally, the thunder and lightening are much worse.
I don't know about that, but it seems so.
I do know that whichever direction the storms are crossing, they are very loud and scary. And great for porch sittin'.
You see, Tom and I have been sitting out on our back porch the past several afternoons in the cooling temperatures under the ceiling fan to just listen to the rain and thunder and to watch the lightening and to take it all in.
It's the best back porch sittin' ever. Worth the price of the house, I'm tellin' you.
The storms and rain have been great to cool off the hot August temperatures, to bring much needed rain and to soothe the soul. The last part is the best. How calming and soothing a good thunderstorm can be.
While ago I indulged by myself eating a late lunch out there and feeling guilty about it the whole time because Tom was at work and not here to enjoy it with me. But, we had last night.
Yesterday evening it started raining so Tom drug the grill in from the deck to the screened in back porch to grill a couple of big ol' steaks. Oh, they smelled good cooking and even better in the eating. This is the way to live, folks, even with - especially with - all of the health problems and other things in life I have to worry about.
The way I look at it is - God has given us this for our enjoyment and relaxation. It brings me great peace to sit out on the back porch in the middle of a thunderstorm and rain and I thank Him for that. Immensely.
Find those things from nature in your own life and let me know what they are so that we can all enjoy them together. Leave a comment, won't you, about what in nature or your life brings you great contentment and/or pleasure.
Tomorrow is the second anniversary of the massive hurricane Katrina and we here on the Mississippi gulf coast and fringes need your prayers and thoughts as we face yet another year without much success in making things right. A lot has been done, but there is a very long way to go.
Thanks for stopping by this stormy afternoon and may the Lord be with you through the rest of the day and tomorrow.
Much love, Dee
P. S. It's also good napping weather, so I think I'll go take one.
Don’t know which I’d like better, the thunderstorm or an afternoon nap?? Never mind, the steak takes first place! Something else that brings much calmness to this old man is to sit beside a waterfall. But it’s hard to beat the soothing effect of a storm blowing by, if you know you’re pretty safe from harm, that is. Glad you’re enjoying the porch.
After the extreme drought we’ve been experiencing, I’m so thankful for the storms we’ve had the last few days. Enjoy your porch–God has blessed you immensely with it, so make the most of it!
Since I started running again it has been nice to come home, jump in the pool, and enjoy something cool to drink.
Hi Dee…I love the rain … this morning it rained on me while I walked and it was glorious! some out walking on the tracks had umbrellas…I was thinking…man…if you sweat like I do, what good is an umbrella??? Anyhoo… sometimes when a storm is blowing up I get my books and run up to Dough Joe’s so I can sip coffee and sit on their big porch under the tin roof. Marvelous!
One thing I miss about living in a small town, is walking around and talking to the folks that sit on their front porches.
Missy (the best chihuahua ever) would walk my cigar from time to time and visit with many of my neighbors. Later the cigar was gone, the dog died and my children came along. But the walking was still fantastic.
Now I’m in the suburbs.
I really miss it.
I love sitting and watching thunderstorms — we have had a few lately but mostly at night or early morning so my choice is often - “sleep or watch the storm” - as I get older sleep is the choice more often than not
:) Sigh (man’s sigh - which means well what a sigh is supposed to mean– thanks for the translation of “woman speak” the other day– but then after 40 years of marriage, I ‘ve learned most of this– it’s just that like many men I’ve got a poor ear forthe nuances of language and so I have to keep learning it over and over and over … well you get the picture I’m sure :):)
Anyhow - I hadn’t been by for a while - the wedding plans taking up much of our time (and you can fill in dozens of other equally poor excuses). It is always good to visit with you — sharing both the goodtimes and the bad — but mostly its your weird thinking that uplifts me
:)
God Bless
Charlie.
I love thunderstorms…I love to watch them on my deck or in my living room with all the lights off…I like to sleep during them too.
I can also be calmed by a great game of tennis…but tennis in a thunderstorm??? not so much.
Dee,
I am so jealous. We could use the rain and I love thunderstorms. They are very soothing to me. and I agree they provide the best napping weather of all.
Peace
Neva
Donna: Just use a wooden racket!
I LOVE thunderstorms! We had an evening of them up here last week. I can sit and watch them all day. I even enjoyed tropical storms and depressions when I lived on the coast of the US and winter gales when I lived in Scotland. Something about the darkness, noise, wind, and power of God revealed in the storm brings me peace. Enjoy the fruits of your labor, Dee.
Blessings today … thought about you on this 2 year anniversary of Katrina.
thunderstorms are fun. we don’t have a clear view at our place, but last time I was at my parents there was a big storm with lots of lightning. and they are surround by fields. that was cool
enjoy your porch
p.s. Dee - Thanks for coming by and leaving a “trashy” comment
:) (big smile — for others its’ an inside joke really!!)
I’m honored that you took the time to add your thoughts on “cleaning up” and “moving ahead”.
God Bless
Charlie
