The Greatest Gift

                        The Greatest Gift

Oh God, in my striving to know you
                     And understand you
What knowledge, what truth is there
                     that I can learn
That has not already been learned
                     by someone, somewhere -
                Smarter than I.

In my heart’s desire to love you
                     I see only small fragments
                Of those great loves
                     You must have already known
                By men who had
                Bigger hearts than I.

In my willingness to serve you
                     I see mostly that -
                The willingness.
                The service is done
                     so much better
                By those stronger than I.

Then, God, I remember the poor widow
who gave you all she had.
This is the gift that I alone can give -
                     All of myself.
Who else can give you more of this
                One gift – than I.
