On The Road

Greetings from Abilene, Texas.  It's been a while since I last posted.  Since last Friday to be exact.

Sorry to be so out of touch, but a lot of miles have been driven between then and now and a lot of visiting has taken place.

We got up at 4 a.m. last Saturday morning to hit the road from Picayune to Dallas.  We left about 4:45 a.m. and I went back to sleep pretty quick and slept for about three hours.  I took my pillow and a throw to cover up with because it was cold outside in the early morning darkness.

We made good time and got to Grand Prairie about 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, just in time to go eat lunch at a really good Mexican food place.  We were hungry and had some time to kill because Tom's daughter and her family were all out and about and not home.

The lunch was terrific.  You can get great seafood in the New Orleans area, but Mexican food is hard - make that nearly impossible - to come by and especially authentic Mexican food.

We enjoyed our Saturday evening visiting with Tuan, Kristine, Julian and Veronica and went to bed late.  But we got up early Sunday morning to head on over to Abilene to my mom's.

Again we made  good time and got here in 2 hours and 20 minutes, which surprised me.  It was only the middle of the morning and we had to wait for my mom to get home from church to let us in the house.

Mom called my sister and her husband to come over for lunch and that worked out well.  We had a really great chicken enchildada casserole for lunch and ate until we were stuffed.  More good Mexican food, this time of the homemade variety.  Even though we all probably ate too much we had tapioca pudding for dessert.  Yummm!

Since then we've been eating, visiting and sleeping, the stuff that vacations are made of.

Tom went back over to Dallas yesterday for a couple of days to visit some more with Kristine and family and to go to Julian's orchestra concert last night.  Julian is a high school freshman at the Booker T. Washington School for Performing Arts in Dallas where he sits first chair violin in the orchestra.  He is the orchestra's concertmaster, the first first year student to ever achieve that honor, so we are really proud of him.

Tom is driving back over to Abilene tomorrow morning to visit some more here until Friday, when we leave to go back to the Dallas area to McKinnney to visit my daughter, Rebecca, and her family.  We plan to head on back home Saturday, Lord willing.

My mom is doing well and is cooking good meals every day for lunch.  We snack at supper time and eat leftovers, which is working out really well.  Monday Mom cooked chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy for lunch and, boy, was that good.  It was me, Tom and my mom and she fried 8 good sized pieces of steak, which we managed to scarf down, leaving only three pieces.

We each ate a piece of leftover steak for supper fixed three different ways, which topped off the day.  Mom made a steak sandwich with mustard, I ate mine cold with a little salt on it and Tom had heated up steak, mashed potatoes and gravy about 8:30 p.m. in front of the football game for his dinner.  Speaking of which, how many of you watched the Monday night football game between the Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens?

Tom and I were pulling for the underdog Ravens and did they ever lose in a heartbreaker at the very end of the game.  Man, that was a tough one to lose.  Great game, but we're still reeling from all that happened.

I guess that's about it for now.  I don't know for sure when I'll be back because we're going to be really busy the rest of the trip, but I just wanted to check in with you guys.  I'll get back to the "thankful alphabet" by next week sometime.  Hopefully, by Sunday or Monday, at the latest.

In the meantime, y'all stay in touch with comments.  Our email is screwed up a bit with me being able to receive messages from everyone else, but not being able to send them out, for some oddball reason.  It's crazy, but that's the deal, so y'all write to me, you hear?!?

Cheers & Blessings to you each today!  Dee

All your food talk is making me hungry–I’d better go whip up some dinner for myself!

    Glad you’re enjoying your trip!

Ah, TexMex, how I miss it. I completely understand–Colorado has good food, but nothing that compares to TexMex.

Glad to hear you are having a good trip!

    Hey Mom,

Glad to hear from you and that you and Tom are doing well. Tell Grandma that I and the family say “hello”! Take care of yourself and don’t wear yourself out too much.

    Have a great trip Dee!

That game was a great one! I didn’t favor anyone … so whoever won I would have liked it!

Wow…that sounds like an exhausting trip w/all the traveling back and forth. But exhausting in a good way, as you get to spend quality time w/all those you care about. Enjoy the rest of your trip! Much love!

Dee, you said you can’t get good mexican food in New Orleans area. They don’t have Del Taco there? My son thinks that’s the very best in mexican food! I disagree.

Sounds like a good trip … hope your drive home is non eventful. Looking forward to having you back more or less “full time” again.

Enjoy Abilene. I wish I were there. I was suppose to be in Abilene for Thanksgiving but went to Ft. Knox for the graduation instead, which was a great thing. But I miss my dear friend in Abilene and long to be with her. We always have great mexican food at some point in our visit!

Of course, being in Texas we get great Mexican food anytime. We have a several new places and we have tried one, Cafe del Rio. It is awesome! There is another place we haven’t tried yet and haven’t even heard anything about yet. We will have to see if it makes it. With so many to choose from, often a new will come in and go back out because of the competition.

So, come on over to Southeast Texas anytime for some good Mexican food and we can have coffee as well!

Enjoy your travels and be safe!

The two keys to judging a City:
    1. Good Mexican food.
    2. Good sweet tea.

    Have a good trip.
