Interesting Theological Debate for the Weekend: Do Dogs Go To Heaven?

May 23rd, 2009 · 13 Comments · Humor, Photos, Videos, Theology

Do dogs
go to heaven?

This is
literally a ‘church signs’ debate, being played out in a Southern US town,
between Our Lady of Martyrs Catholic Church, and Cumberland Presbyterian, a
fundamentalist church.  From top to bottom shows you the response and
counter-response over time.

The
Catholics are displaying a much better sense of humor!  You get the impression
that the Presbyterians are actually taking this seriously and are getting a bit
upset…

What say ye?  Let’s hear the theological debate and which side your views fall on, okay?!

Cheers & Blessings to you all today!  Dee

Is this for real, Dee? If so, amazing.

    Funny!

Although, my minister did actually preach a sermon on this topic last fall!

    It can be found here:

    Interesting stuff, really.

wondering…..not about rocks…but dogs. Do you all see a soul and spirit as the same thing? And if not does a dog have one and not the other?

No debate with me. Dogs and cats GO to heaven! :)

I believe the Bible teaches Heaven will be the Earth as it should have been before Adam and Eve’s sin as it will be when Christ returns.

Rick Atchley had an interesting take on this at the Pepperdine Lectures a few years ago. He said people sometimes ask him if pets will be in Heaven. He said that just as in Eden, pet will be Heaven. Then he paused and said, “Well, maybe not cats.” :)

Hilarious but serious — I doexpect to find “The Rock” in Heaven but I’m not so sure about the rest of them.

    God Bless

Dogs will definitely be a part of the new heavens and new earth, which will also feature new carpet.

interesting debate. I heard Rick ATchely’s series at Pepperdine. It made me rethink alot of my views on heaven….If dogs are there will they come house-broken?

  • Keith Brenton

I’m afraid I’m beginning to adopt a totally bizarre view of the age to come from scripture … I’m not sure that anyone or anything – people, dogs or rocks – will go to heaven.

I think heaven will come down to earth … a new earth, to be sure, and heaven in the form of a heavenly city where God and man will dwell together there will be no night or shame or falsehood or prejudice there. If that’s too literal a reading of Revelation 21, I apologize. (But it gives me comfort, and that – I believe – is part of the purpose of the Revelation: to give folks comfort when trying times are ahead.)

There’s a lot of rocks there. Beautiful, precious stones – big enough to form the foundation of a city 1,400 miles in any direction.

And if the animals – presumably including dogs – aren’t judged, then what is God telling Noah after he steps out of the ark in Genesis 9:5?

I am a traditionalist when it comes to heaven, but not when it comes to hell. Call me inconsistent. As for dogs going to heaven — probably not. Dogs who are loved are already in heaven as far as they are concerned. Dogs who are mistreated are in hell, and those who mistreat them will join them one day.

And cats? God put them on earth so that dogs could eat and floss at the same time. Just saying.

Dee, This is the only time I will side with the Catholics. God loves his creation, every part of it. Being a dog lover, I want to see my Hannah in heaven. She loves unconditionally, just like her Creator.
