iPods: Epilogue

January 4th, 2010 · 9 Comments · Humor, Photos, Videos, Reflections, Tom & Me

We spent our New Year’s Eve in Best Buy, arriving about 30 minutes before the store was to close early.

Ostensibly, we were there to get Tom an iPod (remember the iPod discussions of last week?).  Tom had his Christmas money/cards/coupon stashed in his pocket to make his purchase.  Which he did.

Didn’t take him long.  He knew what he was there for, took charge and did it.

What kind of iPod did he walk out with, you ask?

None.  He gave up all of his Christmas loot to Best Buy toward a brand new, smaller (feminine, perhaps? Definitely less expensive) version of his 27″ iMac.  It was a 21 1/2″ iMac for moi!!!!

So, while Santa came to see him just before Thanksgiving, Santa came to see me New Year’s Eve!  And, I’m tellin’ ya – Santa got lots of lovin’ and kisses!!

Here’s what both of ours look like:

IMac

I feel like the luckiest girl in the world right now.  Married to the greatest guy around these parts, for sure.  Although, I bet I’d have to look far and wide to find a better catch.

Not that I’m looking, you understand.  In fact, we’re spending more time together than ever with him having to teach me all things Mac, since I’ve never used one beofore.  I do believe he likes me having a new Mac better than I do, since he’s long worked with them and knows their capabilities.

I’m just a beginner so it’s quite a learning curve at the moment.  So much so, that I’m so far unwilling to put away my old hp PC sitting here on my desk (in fact I’m writing on it right now).  Plus, I haven’t had time to move over much of my “stuff” yet.

So, you should see me here at my desk with two 21″ monitors on it (the iMac is really much bigger, because it is way longer, being set up HD style)!  Way cool!  I’ll have to get Tom to take a picture of me here with a writer’s dream come true – two keyboards on which to write!

I’ll have plenty to keep me busy in here for a while.  Set up my new mailbox, move all of my addresses over, set up all of my quirky little icons and format everything the way I like it.  I’m very particular about my computer and want everything just so.

Tom had given me my own account on his computer, but I’m left handed and do everything (according to him) backwards.  And, I quickly found out that Apple definitely made everything you do (Apple this, Apple that) on the keyboard for right handed people.  But, I’m learning.

So . . . what say ye computer users?  PC or Mac?  Even for you girls who know next to nothing about computers (I, being the first among you in most aspects), you have to admit the photo above shows a really sleek system.  The entire computer is enclosed in that screen, including fantastic speakers, a camera (to take my picture here to show you one of these days when I’m not sitting here in my night shirt and robe), and wonderful graphics capabilities.

I’m as snug as a bug in a rug here on this cold wintry day.  I’m sure many of you have it much worse.  (What say ye?)  But, even here in South Mississippi the high today is to be 45 degrees with the low a frigid 19 degrees.  Our heater has been set on 68 for the most part and running constantly.

Cheers & many blessings to each of you today!

Dee

P. S.  Let me know what you think about the weather – and “whether” or not I should let my PC totally go – one of these days.  Tom says I will, but I’m not so sure yet.  I really like using Adobe Photo Shop on here and having the large typefaces on my screen, etc.  I’m “change adverse!!”

Oooh, welcome to the wonderful world of Macs!! I switched a little over 2 years ago and haven’t regretted it once. Don’t miss my PC one little bit.

BTW, N. Alabama is chilly, too… High temp today is supposed to be 31, with a low of 13 (it’s 19 degrees out now). They’re even calling for a chance of snow on Thursday and Friday.

Don’t know the temp. I just know it’s col-l-l-l-d in Memphis.

…..as for the rest of it – I’m SO jealous!

I bought Kami a MacBook for her birthday last month. She loves it. Now both of my kids and my wife own Macs. I could if I wanted to, but my 17 in HP laptop is still fairly new and going strong… plus I spend my extra money on guitars.

As for cold, I didn’t escape it when I came south to St. Louis for NCYM. It got up to 16 or so here and they say snow is coming in Wednesday night. Back in Detroit? About the same except is it already snowing.

I replied to this earlier from my iPhone but, alas, it never made it to your comment section. If only I could remember the brilliance behind that initial comment???

Congrats on the Mac. To answer your question: You will eventually let the PC go and never miss it. You can enlarge the type on the screen and you can either get a new photo editing software for Mac that you’ll love more than Photoshop or you can run Parallels, which allows you to run both Mac and PC software on your Mac. You can switch back and forth rather seamlessly between the two. We have Parallels on our office Macs because our Funeral One software (for all the memorial packages and DVDs we produce) is Windows based.

As for Tom … what a guy!!!

PS Cold at night (low to mid 40s) and beautiful during the day … mid 70s to low 80s. But we’ve had some cold days and colder nights.

Welcome to the iMac World. You will love it and the day will come that the PC will ‘no longer have a hold on you’. You know my feelings. I have had a Mac since they were introduced to us in 1984 at a spectacular company meeting in Cupertino, CA. We also got a peek at the fascinating Super Bowl Commercial that ran only once, but has been shown many times since as one of the all time 10 best commercials, but I digress. I had to work on a PC for 8 and 1/2 years when we moved to the mountains and struggled with it the whole time. The Mac is so much easier to use and understand.

As for central CA, it is foggy/dreary/cold here – only in the high 40′s. I hear it is nice on the coast, but that is typical in this region. Stay warm and I certainly agree that Tom is One in a Million.

    I don’t have a Mac but wish I did.
Here in the beautiful Sunshine State, highs in the 40′s and lows in the high 20′s!

We’ve had an iMac for about 3 years now, and we love it. It’s easy to use, and we never have any crashes or have to shut down. I do occasionally have to “force quit” something when the color wheel pops up, but that only takes a few seconds. Congratulations! Tom must be one smart guy. :-) You’ll really love it once you get it all set up. I’m left-handed, too, but I do most things except eat and write right-handed.

You new Mac looks great. I still use PC and have always been very happy with my setup. I have never used a Mac but have always been told by my “Mac friends” they are great. My system is only a few years old so I know I won’t be changing any time soon. I’m happy for you and “Way to go Tom”!!

We still have snow from the 25th and the 27th and are expecting more tonight and tomorrow. Tomorrow we are supposed to be at 0 degrees, with 35-40mph winds and a wind chill factor of -35 degrees. Brrr!!!!
