Finding Direction: The Wind Vane Chronicles

Texas Spring Beauty

Those of you who are regular readers know I was wanting to go out to Texas to see my mom & sister in April so we could take a little three day road trip down into the hill country of Texas to see all of the bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush in bloom.  Alas, Tom having his heart surgery prevented me from getting to go.

Mom & Laura got to see some of the lovely wildflowers in bloom around Abilene, and I was happy for them about that.  Yet, I missed not being able to go with them.

However, a good school friend sent us some outstanding photos of the spring wildflowers around where they live, near Austin.  I thought I’d share these with you here today.  Enjoy!

Aren’t those really beautiful?  And, to think I grew up in Texas!

But, hmmmm.  Somehow I don’t remember seeing any of these when I was just a kid living in Abernathy, just north of Lubbock about 17 miles.  Why do you suppose that is, huh?

Oh . . . maybe it has something to do with the two photos below taken of Lubbock this spring.  Up on the high plateau of what is called the Caprock in the lower panhandle of Texas.  Check it out for yourself:

Now WHY did my dad have to be a cotton farmer up on the high plains of Texas.  Why not a rancher down in the beautiful hill country?  Or, maybe a country and western singer like Willie.

You can see why I left there at 18 and have never moved back.  But, I DO love to visit home, all my family and all of the  beautiful parts of Texas I missed growing up.  You have to admit, it’s a big enough state to have it all, folks!  And IT DOES!!

Cheers & many blessings to you each today!  Dee

The pictures are beautiful, my brother who lives in Tx sent me bluebell pictures too. Beauty like that could be quite a driving distraction. :)

Dee the pix are wonderful. we have a number of desert flowers in bloom here. But we are just not quite as “warm” as normal here in the desert for this time of the year. Not complaining though!!!

When we visited Texas earlier this month, there was a field of these flowers on the church property where we worshiped on Sunday. It was a on a major highway and got LOTS of attention from travelers. They are absolutely beautiful, but hardly compare with the richness of that Lubbock fog!!

That “rich” Lubbock “fog” is DUST, Greg, in case you weren’t looking closely. I’m assuming you were joking about the fog, but just to set the record straight – those are dust storms.

I can remember growing up being in town in the middle of the day (probably a lunch break from school) numerous times and seeing unearthly massive black clouds on the horizon to the northwest moving southeast. They could – and did – consume the landscape in one fell swoop, blowing in and over and through everything it their sight, sometime roaring through at 50 or 60 miles per hour.

Not too many years ago, I experienced the same thing on one of my trips to my mom’s in Abilene. I was out at a Christian book store buying a couple of books and gifts when a black storm like that approached. I just BARELY made it back to my mom’s house and into her garage before it hit.

Out there, of course, you can see for miles on end because it’s the plains, so you can try to get inside somewhere. But that dust invades even the best insulated and sealed homes.

Around here, it’s water we have to worry about coming up, but no longer for the two of us (I HOPE!). We’re on top a high wooded hill. If we get water up here it will be of Biblical, Noah like proportions.

It’s MY understanding the earth will end in fire and be consumed. Now THAT there is no preparation for – except to live right every day, beginning with today~

Wow I thought that was fog too! I had to take a second look when you said it was dust.

Those are really great pics, the hill country really gets some gorgeous patches. For some reason we didn’t harly get any bluebonnets here (about two hours south).

    Thanks for the pretties!

Dee, my in-laws live surrounded by flowers like that in Fredericksburg, Texas. I don’t make it down there very often but when I do, I like to go when the flowers are in bloom. It is wonderful. Loved the pics.
